Eat These Foods to Lose Weight and Stay Healthy
Eating potatoes on a diet is a surprise to most people because we falsely assume potatoes are fattening. But, if you’re like me, when you think of potatoes you think of all the unhealthy ways to eat them.
I’m not advocating that you attempt to diet while eating mashed potatoes, creamed potatoes, potato salad, and french fries. We all know that’s a no no, don’t we?
Nevertheless, potatoes baked, boiled, or even grilled without the added condiments are healthy to eat whether you are dieting or not. So, plain potatoes – white or sweet – are nutrient-rich, fat-free, and low-calorie dishes.
A half a cup of potatoes yields less than 100 calories with 20 or so grams of carbs, and 2 grams of protein and fiber. They come packed with vitamin C, potassium, folate and vitamin B-6.
So potatoes do wind up being a healthy food for losing weight.
But only if you find ways to skip the more fattening additions you may be accustomed to eating with them. And don’t forget that potatoes have a lot of fiber that helps fill you and satisfy your appetite.
2. Whole Grains
Ok, some grains are going to be good for your diet and health, while some not so much.
Processed grains are absent the fiber and nutrients we need so you really should eliminate most processed grains.
What we get instead are carbs that send our blood sugar soaring — along with our waist size. The grains that are good for weight loss are whole grains in their most natural state, and include:
- Whole oats
- Brown rice
Whole grain kernels in their natural state are so low in calories that you can eat plenty without going overboard. So consider whole grains a great food to lose weight.
Oats are healthy grains for losing weight because oats are crammed with soluble fiber. Oatmeal helps to reduce LDL cholesterol which is always healthy, and keeps me feeling full for hours. However, eating oatmeal can backfire on your dieting and health efforts.
Most people do not like oats but eat them because of all the advertising touting them as health food. Because they don’t like oats, they smother them with sugar, butter, milk, and cream.
Oops! There went the dieting.
And the weight loss you have been planning on to get you back in your old clothes.
3. Healthy fats
A few years ago we were all drowning in ads, articles, and books telling us how unhealthy all fats are and how fats turn into fat — or excess pounds.
Well, the truth is that animal fat doesn’t turn into pounds, although there are plenty of reasons to think about how much animal fat you ingest.
But these days we know that eating some fats is extremely healthy, and beneficial to weight loss. They make your meals tastier and helps give you that full feeling so important to dieting.
The Ketogenic diet is a great example of eating healthy and losing weight.
Foods with healthy fats include:
- Fatty fish (e.g. salmon, sardines)
- Cold-pressed safflower, flax, canola, and other oils, as well as olive oil
- Raw nuts and seeds
- Lean Meat and Poultry
4. Whole Foods
Eating pre-prepared meals is the norm these days. We buy it pre-packaged, pre-prepared, and ready to nuke in the microwave to eat in mere seconds.
When we think we’re cooking a healthy meal instead of the microwave ready dishes, we still buy pre-packaged, processed foods.
They are so highly processed that there are few nutrients left. They are full of preservatives and chemicals for extended shelf life and added color.
None of that is real food.
It’s what I call “faux food”.
Faux foods provide something to eat, are fast and easy but make but have few to no beneficial nutrients. Instead, they make us fat and unhealthy.
One of the most appropriate ways to diet and stay healthy is to eat as much fresh and fresh frozen food as you can.
Whole foods haven’t been processed and are full of nutrients that end cravings and satisfy appetites.
If that’s not enough reason to move to whole foods, check this out: By preparing and mixing your own meals you will walk around the kitchen area. The act of doing things like washing, scraping, cutting, chopping, and dicing whole vegetables and fruits instead of throwing a package in the microwave, will burn far more calories.
5. Fresh fruit
I know very few overweight people who don’t like sugar. In fact, most of the population is addicted to refined sugar.
And refined sugar is actually poison to your body.
On the other hand, you can curb those sugar cravings with fresh fruit or packaged. One problem with sugar is that it always calls for more sugar.
However, the natural sugars in fresh fruits work just the opposite. Fresh fruits satisfy cravings, appetites and come packed with healthy nutrients.
There’s no end to the ways you can eat fruits in healthy ways either. Eat fruits fresh, frozen, blended into smoothies, pureed and frozen for popsicles. Googling how to eat fresh fruits can bring back even more creative ideas you haven’t thought of yet.
I don’t know if you’ve ever eaten frozen grapes, but they can serve as candy when you’re having a sweet attack. Peel overripe bananas, wrap them individually in cellophane, freeze overnight for a tasty treat.
Reaching for a piece of fresh fruit is always a healthier option than depending on chips, candy and ice cream.
When it comes to what is best for losing weight and staying healthy it’s best to think of natural whole foods.
A constant diet of “faux foods” means we can never stop the cravings that make us unhealthy and overweight.
When you move away from processed foods to eat the naturallyyou will naturally lose weight and find it easy to maintain your best weight.
